The lightest carbon ceramic brake system is designed for a drag.
Designing and manufacturing the lightest ceramic brake system for Golf GTI.
We received a term of reference to design light brake system for a car used for racing. Main requirement is – as light as possible!!!
The weight of one standard brake rotor for VW Golf GTI – 10,2 kg.
Front pads for 1 wheel weigh 1,5 kg. i.e. front pads’ full weight – 3 kg.
So the weight of front caliper is 7,2 kg.
In total the weight of standard brakes for a one wheel, front axle equals: 10,2 + 1,5 + 7,2 = 18,9 kg. It seems to be not that much, as one brake rotor for Mercedes Benz W463.276 (new Gelandewagen) weighs 20 kg.
We took Porsche 350-28 brake rotor. Designed and produced aluminum hats. Made adapter and brake lines.
So, we put together the brake system, installing it into a brake rotor to test it.
Front caliper weight – 3 332 g.
Front ceramic rotor weight is around 4 kg 🙂
And the brake system for one wheel put together – 8 220 g.
In total the weight advantage is about – 10,5 kg!!!
